Bless the Lord, O My Soul (Psalm 103)
Our worship team recently introduced this new song, "Bless the Lord, O My Soul (Psalm 103)", by Sovereign Grace Music. Based on Psalm 103, this song walks us through the many reasons that believers have to bless the Lord with our entire beings and soul.
Verse 1 speaks of the Lord who is patient, merciful and compassionate to forgive our sins. As Psalm 103:10 writes, our God “does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities”. His forgiveness is comprehensive and complete, and “as a father shows compassion to his children,so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him” (Ps 103:13). We praise this merciful and compassionate God who forgives the sins of sinners.
My God is slow to anger when I go astray
Bless the Lord, O my soul
For all of my betrayals, He will not repay
Bless the Lord, O my soul
Through mercy and compassion His great love is proved
He covers my transgressions like the snow
As far as east from west are all my sins removed
Bless the Lord, O my soul
Verse 2 highlights our frailty. Like flowers, we are here today and gone tomorrow. “But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him… (Ps 103:17a). We praise the eternal God who shows steadfast love to His people.
He saved me from the pit when I had lost all hope
Bless the Lord, O my soul
From endless springs of kindness all His blessings flow
Bless the Lord, O my soul
Our days will fade like flowers and are quickly spent
And like the wind our years will come and go
Everlasting favor is His covenant
Bless the Lord, O my soul
Verse 3 expresses our heart’s desire to praise God not just in the present, but through all eternity. Our God is God over heaven and earth, and all nature witnesses and testifies to His character. Our song of praise is one that all creation echoes. We praise te God from whom all things flow.
Merciful and gracious is my God to me
Bless the Lord, O my soul
I will tell His goodness through eternity
Bless the Lord, O my soul
And bless the Lord, you angels, all you heav’nly hosts
And every living creature here below
Oh praise the Father, praise the Son, and Holy Ghost
Bless the Lord, O my soul
This song is a timely reminder that helps us to rehearse timeless truths. As we learn this together, may we also encourage one another to continue to fix our eyes on this God and bless the Lord!
And bless the Lord, you angels, all you heav’nly hosts
And every living creature here below
Oh praise the Father, praise the Son, and Holy Ghost
Bless the Lord, O my soul
